January 2016 examines methods of record keeping and self-preservation through image, written, and oral narratives. I attempt to read my personal journal entries that I translated into Vietnamese, which are then translated back into English through the form of subtitles. Alongside the re-story telling is iPhone footage captured on the day of the translated entry. Through my attempts of speaking Vietnamese, the video considers the ways in which language can be used as a tool to measure one’s identity and can create gaps between generations and geography.
